Based solely on size I'd assume your pretty item was a Sharp shinned hawk.
Feel free to email me the pic.

Hawks in general don't have a problem feeding on each other when the
opportunity presents itself. There's a good pic on the net of a Goshawk
flying with a freshly killed Cooper's Hawk in its talons.
