12/15 10:30-1PM, very high tide (from full moon last night), sunny, 35F.
The immature black crowned night heron was sitting in the parking lot at
edge by entrance to observation platform. Looks exactly like one on page
65 of Sibley guide. buffy breast and belly with pale gray streaking,
grayish back-washed out looking with heavy bill and gold eyes. It looked
thin when its feathers went flush to body.
Someone tried to approach it but it walked away, then returned to
observation deck entrance. Several observers remarked about it.
On marsh: 2 Mute swans, 4 Buffleheads diving, . At feeders- 4 House
finches, 9 House sparrows, 1 Song sparrow, 2 American Goldfinches, 2
Chickadees, 7 Cardinals (4 males, 3 Females) 1 female had a silver band
on right leg, 6 Mourning doves.
