Just to add a bit:
The habitat on offshore islands that hold heron and egret rookeries is dynamic. The taller trees may be impacted by storms but that helps to release the shrub layer. When this happens there are winners and losers in the rookery as great egrets prefer to nest in the tall trees while snowy egrets make use of the shrub and vine tangles.
