We were up visiting family in Saranac Lake and decided to make the trek up to Massena to see at least one of the two great grey owls that have been reported there for several weeks. Sure enough, at about 4pm on Robinson Bay Rd. in Robert Moses State Park, one great grey was seen, clear as day along the side of the road (of course, locating it was pretty easy considering the half dozen cars parked there and people with giant cameras). He was calm as a cucumber, casually flying from tree to tree,
on the lookout for prey. Swooped down once for something, but came up empty. It's pretty amazing how consistent the sightings have been...same road, same times of day (7-9am, 3-5pm) for a couple weeks. Also saw a barred owl that has been sighted in the company of the great grey(s). If you can make the trip up, chances seem pretty good you'll see the bird of a lifetime! And if not, marvel at the amount of deer they have in that park!
