An immature Black-crowned Night-Heron was at South Bay, Bantam L.,Morris, early this a.m. before rain started. This is presumably a post-breeding wanderer and uncommon inland, especially away from the major river valleys. This is the time of year when long-legged waders wander far from their breeding areas, not just within the state but from points farther south. The most expected of these by far is Great Egret, but the possibilities are many. If you want to think big think Wood Stork or Reddish Egret. The night-heron was along the W shore between Rt 209 and the Morris Town Beach docks, visible from the road but well- camouflaged against the dead branches of a fallen tree limb.
