The hawk watch today in New Haven produced 111 migrating raptors, highlighted by 62 Broad-winged Hawks - all but one in several kettles (swirling flocks riding aloft on thermals) during the 10-11 hour. While hard to count while "kettling," the hawks eventually set their wings and glide off in the same direction (west at this location), making them quite easy to count.
We also had two flyover, calling Dickcissels and a steady movement of Blue Jays, which unlike the hawks are not easy to count at all. They arrive from the E in flocks but often circle the point several times, sometimes dropping out of sight and often with flocks merging before they leave.
