Lighthouse Point Park, New Haven, 10/11/17, 7am-4:45pm - 293 Migrating Hawks.. 2 Black Vulture, 11 Turkey Vulture, 53 Osprey, 11 Bald Eagle, 10 Northern Harrier, 51 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 64 Cooper’s Hawk, 8 Broad-winged Hawk, 23 American Kestrel, 10 Merlin, 9 Peregrine Falcon, 25 Unknown Accipeter, 2 Unknown Buteo, and 14 Unknown Raptor. A lot of the hawks were up high in the sky or out far, making them difficult to spot and identify. Because of this, some birds could not be identified exactly. 41 of the 293 birds were either Unknown Accipiters, Unknown Buteo, or Unknown Raptors. If an Accipeter can’t be further identified as a Sharp-shinned Hawk or Cooper’s Hawk, it is counted as an Unknown Accipeter. And if hawk is difficult to see because it is far away and you can’t even tell if is an Accipeter, Falcon, or Buteo, it is counted as a Unknown Raptor. Thanks to Robin McAllister for getting there early to count, Dan Bavir, Sol Satin, Don Morgan, Ken Merrifield, Jim Cortina, Dave Peake-Jones and everyone else who joined in on the fun today.
