> Several people have asked me how big the survey blocks for the upcoming bird atlas will be, and it came up again at a presentation I gave at Bent of the River last night. To set things straight, each block is one-sixth of a USGS quad. Quad sizes vary depending on where you are because they are based on lines of longitude and latitude, but in CT each quad is approximately 55 square miles in size, making each atlas block slightly more than 9 square miles.

> For those who remember the first atlas, I double-checked and the book by Louis Bevier states that blocks were 5 km x 5 km (p 9), which matches ….. slight discrepancies are due to oddities of a grid system based on lat/longs, rather than measured distanced.
