[CT Birds] Napatree CBC highlights

Thanks to a great effort from many volunteers, we have a tentative total of 125 species. This count straddles the RI/CT border and catches the eastern tip of Fisher's Island. Highlights include:

Pacific Loon (RI) - Central Beach, Quonochontaug
Greater White-fronted Goose (RI/CT - 3) - two were seen on the Pawcatuck River in North Stonington/Westerly. One bird was on both sides of the river.  A third bird was on both sides of the lower part of the Pawcatuck River in Pawcatuck/Westerly.
Laughing Gull (RI - 39) - 35 came into roost at the Weekapaug Breachway and 4 were seen elsewhere
Orange-crowned Warbler (RI) - Quonochontaug Beach
Lesser Black-backed Gull (RI - 2) - Watch Hill Light, Weekapaug Breachway
Iceland Gull (RI) - Watch Hill, East Beach
Black-headed Gull (RI/CT) - RI - presumed same bird at East Beach and Watch Hill Light); CT - Stonington Point
House Wren (RI) - Avondale Farm Preserve
Baltimore Oriole (RI - 3!) - all on Oceanview Highway in Watch Hill
Snowy Owl (RI/CT)- bird photographed at Napatree Point was seen flying toward Stonington Harbor
Greater Yellowlegs (CT) - Stonington, private property
Northern Shoveler (CT) - Stonington, private property
Black-legged Kittiwake (RI) - Quonochontaug
Ring-necked Pheasant (CT/NY - 14) - all presumed released/escaped, 12 on Fishers Island, 1 Barn Island, 1 Stonington, private property
Swan sp. (RI) - a swan showing characteristics of a non-Mute Swan was seen in fading light at the Weekapaug Breachway

Other birds notable in general or for this count were Wood Duck (1), Red-necked Grebe (3), Razorbill (1 -  all time low), Eastern Meadowlark (3), Common Raven (7), Ipswich Savannah Sparrow (8), Bald Eagle (4), Fish Crow (2), Peregrine Falcon (5), American Kestrel (2), and Killdeer (3).

Notable misses for this relatively young (16th year) count included Marsh Wren for the first time; Virginia Rail for the second time; and American Coot, Purple Finch, and Yellow-breasted Chat for the third time.
