[CT Birds] Molting Goldfinches

Goldfinches here have begun their prealternate molt. It is the bright yellow rectrices (tail feathers) that are coming in first. It seems a little early for this. If day length is a crucial factor in initiating molt, global warming would not be a factor. “The goldfinches are unique among the finches by having an extensive prealternate body molt in the spring” (from Beadle and Rising).
