From Chris Elphick
12/30 - Moosup -- 1 BARNACLE GOOSE, 1 1st-winter GLAUCOUS GULL, 1 ad
ICELAND GULL.
From Tim Antanaitis:
12/30 - West Hartland, Mill St -- 4 PINE GROSBEAKS feeding on berries
in front yard of 259 at 11:00
Barkhamsted (Riverton), Main St -- 9 PINE GROSBEAKS in treetops behind
the Glass Blowing Studio at 11:45
Winchester, intersection of South Rd and Hollow Rd -- 1 NORTHERN
SHRIKE on treetop overlooking the pond at 3:00
From Andy Thiede
12/30 - Norfolk, Shepard Road -- PINE GROSBEAKS spotted from 9:15 AM
through 10:30 AM, a flock of about 30, with 7 or 8 males. Beautiful
and close looks. If you have not come out yet to see these birds,
don't think twice, this is an awesome opportunity. Plenty of
crabapples are still left for them to feast upon.
From Penny Solum:
12/30 - Westport, Sherwood Island State Park -- Yellow-breasted Chat
in thickets near the two small ponds on the West Beach.
From Donna Lorello:
12/30 - Branford yard sightings -- 1 Brown Creeper around 7am
From Steve Kotchko
12/30 - Wethersfield -- The Glaucous Gull that has been at
Wethersfield Cove on and off this month was present in late afternoon
Sunday (12/30). Hundreds of gulls roost at this mostly iced-over cove
overnight. Usually it takes a careful scan here to pick out a
Glaucous or Iceland if they are present.but Sunday the Glaucous Gull
cooperated by sitting and standing on ice near the edge of the parking
lot.
From Clay Taylor:
12/29 - Mystic, Ender's Island -- Razorbill, 3 Red-necked Grebes, 2
Black Scoters, 7 Snow Buntings.
From Bob Bitondi
12/30 - Pomfret Center, yard -- first winter Northern Shrike, perched
for several minutes on the thistle feeder that had Common Redpolls on
it minutes earlier.
Editor's Note:
I have a good second-hand report that a Pine Grosbeak has visited a
crabapple tree in Bridgewater. Since I don't believe we have had any
other reports from that town I am passing it on as one more bit of
information on the state of the finch incursion.
