***** Very Special Announcements from the COA Electronic Committee
*****
The first announcement is something completely new. We have created
CTBirds, an open discussion email list, for the Connecticut birding
community to discuss birds and birding in the state. Tell everyone
about what you are seeing, ask questions about birds or places to
bird, discuss bird conservation or details of bird identification, it
is up to you. Anything about Connecticut birds or of interest to
Connecticut birders is appropriate. A few of the things we hope this
will provide include:
- More timely information on bird sightings. When sightings are sent
to CTBirds you don't have to wait for the nightly report to read them,
they are sent out immediately.
- A beginner-friendly place for new members of the birding community
to expand their knowledge.
- A forum for the advanced birders to discuss the details of rare and
difficult bird identification, particularly when something provocative
has been seen in the state.
The actual value of the list will be determined by those who choose to
participate, and we hope that will include YOU!
When you sign up for this list you will begin receiving any new
messages right away. There may be a short wait before you can post
while a moderator tries to be sure you are a person and not a spambot.
You can choose between receiving each message, or a digest of
messages, and can even suspend receiving messages entirely. All
subscription requests and changes are made at:
http://lists.ctbirding.org/mailman/listinfo/ctbirds_lists.ctbirding.org
After signing up you will receive an email with instructions on
completing the process.
Messages to the list will be archived at:
http://lists.ctbirding.org/pipermail/ctbirds_lists.ctbirding.org/
The daily report will continue, though the intention is that it will
shrink back over time to just the truly rare and uncommon bird
sightings. While anyone can still send sighting reports to
CTBirdReport at msbx.net for inclusion in the daily report, we hope you
will subscribe to CTBirds and instead send them to
ctbirds at lists.ctbirding.org, where they will appear unedited AND be
used for the daily summary. We ask that you still use the standard
format for the rare birds, but you can also include whatever other
birds and details that you think are worth reporting. Many of you
know how much has been edited out from what you send in when compiling
the daily report; now you have an open forum without such
restrictions. We also ask that you review the few rules about posting
when you sign up, particularly those about not reporting some owls and
about including your name and town.
The second announcement is just that we are changing the way this
daily report is sent. Current subscribers should not have to do
anything. I will move current subscribers to the new system in groups
each day, so you might not get your reports from the new list for
several days or even a few weeks. You will still receive all the
reports. The new system allows you to subscribe to the list, suspend
receiving reports while on vacation, or unsubscribe from the list, all
from this web page:
http://lists.ctbirding.org/mailman/listinfo/ctdailyreport_lists.ctbirding.org
This new tool also provides an archive of reports here:
http://lists.ctbirding.org/pipermail/ctdailyreport_lists.ctbirding.org/
Both these lists are brought to you by the Connecticut Ornithological
Association (COA) as part of our support for Connecticut birding.
They are open to everyone, but we hope that everyone will consider
becoming a member to support the COA in turn. Information on joining
the COA is at:
http://www.ctbirding.org/join.htm
If you have questions about the list send them to me at
rmharvey at snet.net.
Good birding!
