 FROM FRANK MANTLIK
02/09/09 - Windsor, Windsor landfill -- SLATY-BACKED GULL, 2nd or 3rd
cycle, discovered initially among only about 200 gulls about 9:30 am
by my companion Patrick Dugan. Several others, including Greg Hanisek
and Ed Hagen soon arrived, and agreed with the ID. If accepted, this
would be only the 2nd state record (the first was an adult/4th cycle
bird found 28 Nov 2008 by Nick Bonomo at the same place). Patrick & I
remained on site till about 3:30, last seeing the SBGU about 2:50pm.
The bird was about Herring Gull size, with a dark gray mantle, though
not as dark as Great Black-backed Gull. The bill was of moderate
size, basally a dull yellow, with a blotchy dark tip. The iris was
light (yellow), with a dark smudge about the eye. Legs were a deep
but bright pink. The trailing edge of the wing had a broad white
margin (tertial crescent). Photos I obtained exhibit these features
and more. Also present were 1 adult ICELAND GULL (with a damaged
right foot), 4 BLACK VULTURES.
