Thank you all for your comments.  I do not think this was a predator attack (we have no English sparrows, and the occasional House Wren contests of previous years were not apparent); the initially living birds appeared intact, without noticeable infestations, and responsive if somewhat inactive.  Their subsequent bodies showed no obvious signs.  I do not know how I would get one tested, if this is still possible.  We will definitely replace the box, which has been around a number of years.
The adults are nowhere to be seen, and may have abandoned the nestlings just before some began emerging though not for much time.
