Hi All,

This morning, Kimberly Jannarone and I had a very successful trip to see the Upland Sandpipers just over the border in Massachusetts, and I thought others might like a quick report.

We counted six birds, including at least one juvenile, in the grassy areas northeast of the runway at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee/Ludow, MA. We had clear, extended scope views of one adult for the entire time we were there, plus brief but still enjoyable views of the others. Birds were very accommodating, mostly on the ground, with some short local flights. Conditions were good when we arrived (calm and overcast); as the sun began to shine the heat shimmer increased noticeably, at times making distant views impossible. Even when shimmer was low, our digiscoped photos were mostly mediocre. We may have heard some distant vocalizations, but nothing clearly. Regardless, two big thumbs up.

The place to set up the scope is just outside the airfield’s perimeter fence, near "Hole Specialists" (a deep-hole drilling company), herehttps://www.google.com/maps/place/42%C2%B012'18.2%22N+72%C2%B030'58.9%22W/@42.205061,-72.5170182,160m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xbc9fef6731c49517!8m2!3d42.205061!4d-72.516348. Google Maps initially took us on a dead-end route to locked gates, but taking Randall Rd. by the Hampdem County Jail worked instead.

Also present were Grasshopper Sparrows (including one right at the fence), several Meadowlarks, a Northern Harrier, a Bobolink, a Horned Lark, a few Killdeer, some Wild Turkeys, and a coyote.

All told, a very satisfying Sunday expedition across state lines!
