Not sure how unusual this is, but we had a Downy go into one of our
backyard birds boxes and sit inside for a good 10 minutes.  We could see
his head busy moving around inside, then he assumed the lookout position
for a few minutes before flying off.  First time we've seen a Downy go into
the box.

They use the bird houses when it gets cold..for warmth. In your case, could
be be insects in box they are feeding on!

Funny thing Brian . I found a downy in one of my bluebird houses a few
weeks ago.  It flew off and have not seen it around the house since.
Frequently comes to my feeders.
