Migration Tonight

9/22/22, 8:00-9:30 PM — Saugatuck Elementary School football fields, Westport, CT

I went to the football fields at Saugatuck Elementary not too long ago to get a sample of tonight's migration, and indeed no tree cover (and thus no obstructive insect noise) made for excellent listening. The results were: 1 veery, 16 Swainson's thrush, 2 chipping sparrow, 1 white-throated sparrow, 6 savannah sparrow, 4 common yellowthroat, 7 northern parula, 1 chestnut-sided warbler, 1 pine warbler, 4 yellow-rumped warbler, 1 scarlet tanager, and 1 indigo bunting, as well as many more unidentified calls (circa 45). That this many birds should be heard in the early hours of the night, which are usually less productive for nocturnal flight calls, bodes well for the volume of migration tonight overall. One has crisp, northerly winds and cool temperatures to thank.

Go out birding tomorrow!
