I birded the Lordship peninsula of Stratford 12/8, and found the following highlights: Long Beach - 2 NORTHERN GANNETS Lordship Seawall - 10 NORTHERN GANNETS Stratford Point - 2 NORTHERN GANNETS, 1st-winter COMMON EIDER, actual count of 1700+ scoters offshore (estimated 75% surf, 25% white-winged, calm sea conditions though backlighting), EASTERN MEADOWLARK,

Grays Creek/Longshore Park - 2 adult YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS Southport-Southport Beach-1 adult breeding LAUGHING GULL,25+ BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS Black-crowned Night-herons were the "bird of the day".The group at Old Mill Beach was the largest number in one small area that I have seen in the last three years.I estimate

Eurasian Collared-Dove and young Red-necked Grebe at Bronte Harbour Sunday Aug. 3

Just prior to seeing the ECD we were surprised to see a young (estimated 2 weeks old) Red-necked Grebe with two adults near the mouth of Bronte Creek. There are two active grebe nests in the Outer Harbour Marina just east of the Lighthouse Restaurant. Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte Rd. (Oakville) and go to the lake.

I conservatively estimated 500 birds but 1000 might not be out of the question. These birds were all in one massive grouping feeding in low weeds in the east of Dufferin. Directions: Tornado Drive is located running southerly off Canal Rd. and is the second road east of where Canal Rd passes under the 400 highway.

[Ontbirds] 50+ White-winged Gulls near Casselman Ontario

There were several hundred gull present including an estimated 35 Glaucous and 15 Iceland, including just about every plumage imaginable, plus one adult Thayer's. Great Black-backed and Herring made for a five gull day in mid January. Also present were a Merlin, many Horned Lark and a mixed flock of Snow Bunting and Lapland Longspur.

A couple of birders who stopped to talk to us as we were scanning fields for plovers told us that they had estimated about 2200 Black-bellied Plovers in the Hillman shorebird cell around 1:00 p.m. today. Dave Martin and Linda Wladarski Harrietsville, ON damartin@xplornet.com
