[Ontbirds] Snowy Owls, Snow Buntings Lucan
Tue, Feb 17, 2009 4:31 AM
We also had a huge flock of Snow Buntings part way down the Line, I would estimate 5000 birds on the road and the fields, quite a site. There were numerous small flocks of Horned Larks along the way. When we first got to the Roman Line we had a flock of 4 turkeys, 2 males and 2 females that were having an encounter with a single male.

[Ontbirds] Greater Snow Geese east of Lancaster
Fri, Mar 29, 2013 6:34 PM
Difficult to give a good estimate of total numbers on the river but it is well over 50,000. The flock is split into three parts so they don't all go up at once. Brian Morin Directions: Exit Hwy 401 at Lancaster. At the stop light at the end of the exit ramp go straight, onto South Service Rd.

[Ontbirds] Lapland Longspurs, Richardson Side Rd. and Lakeshore Rd. 311, Essex County, Northeast of Leamington
Thu, May 8, 2014 12:51 AM
We made a very conservative estimate of 300+ birds. Directions: Lakeshore Rd. 311 can be reached by taking Hwy. 77 south from the 401 or north from Leamington. Drive east until you come to Richardson Side Rd. which ends at a "T" intersection with Lakeshore Rd. 311. The birds were in the large field of stubble (not corn) Northwest of the intersection.

[Ontbirds] Shorebirds in the GTA
Sun, May 17, 2015 2:50 PM
I didn't pick out any rarities and not much in terms of variety today, but I'd estimate there were over 40 semipalmated plovers and likely over 100 peeps as well as a few yellowlegs, spotted sandpipers and killdeer. A scope is highly useful and probably necessary. Scan all shorelines slowly.

[Ontbirds] Amazing morning on Pelee north dyke
Tue, Sep 6, 2016 2:07 PM
Most amazing were many large flocks of Bobolinks leaving the Pelee marsh headed inexplicably south, conservatively estimated at 1100 birds! Nine species of shorebirds including 6 Buff-breasted Sandpipers (reported yesterday in an onion field just north of this one) and a late fly-over, calling Upland Sandpiper.

RE: East Bay, Nassau - Fuel pump inaccuracies?
Tue, Apr 13, 1999 12:09 AM
But he was also basing his estimate on fuel gauge measurement and logged usage. All I'm saying is pay attention at these pumps. If a pump operator wants to cheat you, he doesn't have to do it with a bad flowmeter. One way is to simply not reset the pump when you pull in. (There was a small boat ahead of us filling 10 gallon fuel containers.)

Re: Single vs. Twin & Simple Math
Thu, Apr 29, 1999 1:08 PM
If they don't share such components, they may be considered independent and the estimated probability of simultaneous failure may be reduced. (Not to mention the math being simpler.) By the way, it wasn't my intention to advocate twins as Al P. seemed to interpret my remarks. I was attempting to clarify the math for Patrick G.
