Re: [time-nuts] HF frequency counting receiver
Mon, Jun 20, 2016 9:21 PM
But this did involve a lot of visual averaging and estimation on the 'scope as the apparent received frequency varied. This was the usual method of measuring frequencies off air in the day. Most more "modern" FMT approaches have been using sound cards, but I've no experience of these.

Despite this, it is often used to get an estimate which is useful in a range of applications.

HP10811 Oscillator Thermal Fuse
Thu, May 11, 2017 11:42 PM
Of those, the majority 3,721 resulted in the 10811 being tossed in the garbage as “another junker”……(yes, those are estimates, but I’d bet they are close based on the number of 10811’s made and how flakey those fuses are). Bob

Noise Floor

With a single mixer setup (which *is* much easier to build) the floor is not as simple to estimate. The same is true of some (but not all) counter based setups. Bob

monitoring LTZ1000 chip temperature
Tue, Jan 28, 2014 12:08 PM
In order to understand the dynamics of the LTZ1000 temperature regulation loop better in order to estimate the chip temperature response due to ambient temperature fluctuations, I am attempting to produce a model of the thermal impedance of the chip by fitting a Foster RC ladder (later transforming this to the equivalent Cauer filter) to the transient thermal

I hesitate to estimate numbers from such a brief and compromised observation but I wouldn't be surprised if there were twenty on the ground, and ten or more in that bunch. Roy Harvey Beacon Falls, CT

Geese Spectacle @ Broad Brook includes Snow Geese
Thu, Feb 28, 2013 12:28 AM
There were still geese coming in at 6pm when I left and estimated 4000 were present. It was an amazing spectacle of nature. They've gotta be somewhere. Dan Rottino Sent from my iPhone.

Stonington Borough 2/14

From over the heaps of snow on the south and west sides, and before the southerly winds rose, I viewed many loons, horned grebes (20 was my low estimate), frisky surf scoter at a long distance, brant, common eider, a few bufflehead, a couple common goldeneyes, a great cormorant, and one long-tailed duck.
