Hi all - Just a quick note - if you have completed your Christmas Bird Count and are struggling with how to estimate your "Miles Walked" total, here's a great way - Go to Google Earth (it's a free download that takes only a few minutes, but is endlessly entertaining) Find the satellite map of your CBC area At the toolbar atop the screen, Select the little

Re: [CT Birds] Nesting Least Terns
Tue, Jun 16, 2009 8:28 PM
At the time I estimated (on Ebird) that I had seen 35 L. Terns, but I think that was a very conservative number. I don't know if this is a habitual nesting place for L.Terns, and I didn't think much of it at the time, but I hope the information is of some help. Re: [CT Birds] alcid?

A recent report from Montauk, NY estimated over 1,000 Razorbills off the point so there certainly is plenty around. The recent storm may have moved a few to the CT shoreline. No one knows better than I how pelagic and semi-pelagic birdless LI Sound along the CT shoreline can seem, but every once in a while you can turn up a gem.

Re: [CT Birds] Puffin Eggs

As the article linked below says, "It is estimated that around 3 million pairs breed in Iceland each year – that´s 6 million puffins but only 70% of the total are breeding birds. So the total population of puffins in Iceland is between 8 and 10 million birds."

I estimate 20 or so. Then I saw a Red Tailed Hawk low in the sky, looking for the right current to soar in. I also heard, but did not see, Black Capped Chickadees, a Red Bellied Woodpecker or two and Crows. I could hear a whole mess of sparrows in the grassland area where they are trying to lure Grasshopper Sparrows.

Merlin and Snow Buntings

I estimated the bird to be flying at well over 100 kph in level flight. Being unsuccessful again it once again lit on top of a utility pole giving me remarkable looks at this beautiful bird. The point of this posting is simply to remark upon the tremendous capabilities speedwise of this Falcon. An amazing encounter.
