Re: [time-nuts] measuring noise of power supplies (was: For those that insist on using switching power supplies)
Tue, Oct 18, 2016 10:25 AM
I used the noise curves to estimate what the integrator gain should be and after adjusting it for minimum noise from about 0.1 to 10 Hz, it was very close to the actual crossover point in the datasheet specifications. RMS noise was measured by taking the standard deviation of the DC values from a Fluke 8505A over 10 seconds.

Re: [time-nuts] Down-conversion to IF and sampling

If you are trying to extract frequency from the signal (you are after the center frequency of WWVB) then both the offset oscillator and the ADC clock will matter: Your baseband tone is Fwwvb - Flo = Fif Your estimate of that tone is based on the frequency of the ADC samples.

I suspect it was "yes". It will have been using carrier phase only, not the L2 modulation (which is encrypted).

Re: [time-nuts] NEO-M8N vs. NEO-M8T

That's the only idea I can up up with off the top of my head to check whether such a patch would actually improve the clock estimate noticeably.

Re: [time-nuts] The need for quartz crystals and mains frequency (was: Mains Frequency)

I don't worry about what time it says, but I sometimes look to estimate total power outage time (can be quite a lot up there) since the last reset. I think it's around sixty years old. It has the flag indicator as described, that resets when you pull the time set knob at the bottom.

Re: [volt-nuts] Experiment: tilting LTZ reference

By the way: can you estimate the room temperature which was during the experiment? >From your description of thermal shielding I got the impression that on the 0 degrees orientation is with the legs of the LTZ above the metal can. Or did I mis-interpret the description? On the other side the PCB could be mounted vertically in the case.

What made a HP3458A so expensive
Sat, Jan 18, 2014 4:41 PM
(That's an estimation by Joe Gellers series number collection) As the 3458A is a niche product with homeopathic series volume, the development, verification/validation, special reliability engineering, selection and burn-in measures, QA costs had to be paid per unit in the beginning.

SKUAS: HAS marine & seabird survey in GOM finds multiple (Great) Skuas
Mon, Oct 13, 2014 4:56 PM
Here are some highlight estimated numbers, in ad hoc sequence, before processing data and photos from all team observers (a trip report, including numbers by location, will be available in a week): SKUA spp, 4-5 (one was seen better and identifiable as a Great), mostly in association with flocks of Great Shearwaters. Northern Fulmar, 20.
