Juxtaposition plus
Sun, Dec 30, 2007 2:40 AM
January - did our usual loop to the north of Montauk Point in search of seabirds upon returning to the Point and in search of Kittiwakes, someone spotted one bird BUT for the next 10 minutes we stood in awe of a wave of kittiwakes flying north to south - I think the estimate was 10000 birds!

Re: [CT Birds] Stratford Point Northern Gannet
Wed, Mar 24, 2010 9:31 AM
3/23 5:00-5:45, Stratford shoreline - I saw 1 NORTHERN GANNET flying off the Lordship Seawall (5:15 pm), as well as an estimated 5000 gulls (herring & ring-billed; no Bonaparte's) resting on the calm waters off Long Beach-Seawall-Short Beach during high tide (foggy, drizzly). Also many flocks of Brant, and some DC Cormorants, but almost no other waterfowl.

Re: [CT Birds] Stratford gull frenzy at noon
Wed, Mar 16, 2011 12:44 AM
Rough estimates: 3000 Ring-billed, 2000 Herring, 10 Great Black-backed, 1 adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED, ZERO Bonaparte's Gulls. Also, 2 Double-crested Cormorants, a smattering of usual puddle and sea ducks, decent numbers of Brant. The gulls periodically flew and shifted position/location, presumably depending on where the plankton was densest.

A little good news from Michigan

Only the males sing, so estimates of breeding population size are obtained by doubling the number of singing males recorded, based on the assumption that each male has a mate in its territory. The 2011 survey was a joint effort by the DNR, U.S. Forest Service, U.S.
