Directions to site of last year's Chuckwillswidow
Thu, May 3, 2007 9:07 PM
Once headed north on Rte 156 you'll go about 4 miles (very rough estimate here) to the forest entrance on the right. The entrance is marked but kind of comes up on you suddenly on a curve after passing Elys Ferry Rd on your left. The forest road is technically called Keeny Rd but it is dirt and quite rough in places so drive carefully.

Sunday at Naugatuck SF - Golden-winged Warbler
Sun, May 13, 2007 6:04 PM
estimate after checking maps. To reach the spot, take Hunters Mountain Road to the end. This is by the open fields that are familiar to many of you. At the end there is a left turn blocked by a green gate, which is where the walking starts.

Third time's the charm
Mon, Dec 24, 2007 11:58 PM
I'd estimate we saw 10 + at one time. After a stop at the Canaan Mcdonalds I headed for Housatonic River Road where I did NOT find either Cedar or Bohemian Waxwings between about 11:15 and 1:00 PM, and a few others came up empty as well. However, there were two Pine Grosbeaks in the tops of the tall trees to the left of the open field area.

(for larvae) Bonaparte’s Gull 2008 2 29 91 Stamford, Holly Pond roosting at low tide Dennis Varza Fairfield

I would like an estimate of number of gulls (species differentiation helpful but not necessary), a list of other feeding species, water conditions and wind. Dennis Varza Fairfield. 7:00 Fairfield, Southport Beach.

Rough-leg, Shovelers, gullllsss

Short Beach, Stratford - a fairly good estimate of 8,000 gulls (again at least 75 percent Ring-billed and few Great Black-backed) on the beach and bars toward Milford Point at low tide. We found one 1st cycle GLAUCOUS GULL in the masses.   Milford Point - We went there later when the tide was higher.

Who makes holes in the snow?
Sun, Jan 16, 2011 2:48 PM
I would estimate at least a quarter mile of them. I know this because last year, as the snow melted, you could see them all over the lawn and leading to and from most all the trees. They seem to use these trails for yes, transportation about, but also when on the snow, they are near them at all times when danger threatens.

Bluff Point 8/23 AM
Tue, Aug 23, 2011 2:59 PM
Other birds of note - Worm-eating Warbler and 3 Warbling Vireo - not common at the park for morning flight, 50 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, an estimated 220 American Redstarts - seemed to be about 80% of the total warblers IDed so probably more than 220.  A possible Cerulean Warbler got away.

Gulls of the Norwalk Islands.
Sat, Mar 17, 2012 11:47 PM
The number of birds observed were so large that the estimates are very loose. We have come to believe that the gulls seen yesterday in Norwalk are the same ones in Fairfield today. And, likely the same ones in Stamford earlier in the week. It seems that they travel further than expected to find the barnacle plumes.
