PINE GROSBEAK - BOHEMIAN WAXWING
Sat, Jan 26, 2008 8:42 PM
After 10 mins, these 4 birds flew into a Maple tree, and to my amazement, many other PGs joined the 4 in the maple from the surrounding trees, estimating 40 or more! As I scanned these new birds, I also spotted 2 BOHEMIAN WAXWING within them!

Re: [CT Birds] Ruffed Grouse Question

It also would be interesting to see if there are decent population estimates for the Eastern Coyote in Connecticut over the course of the last 60 years. I agree that the Ruffed Grouse surveys conducted by the State DEP are most important in understanding the recent status of this bird in Connecticut. Steve Broker Cheshire

There are mapping tools to help locate the spot where your observation occurred and then you simply estimate the numbers of each bird species you observe and enter that information into the checklist. The following birds have been chosen as the target species: a.. Upland Sandpiper (Endangered) a.. American Kestrel (Threatened) b..

I would estimate that 90% of the migrants came through the hot corner between 06:10 and 07:15. As always, a few lingered in the park and/or continued to trickle through later. No problems with the Amtrak police - I have not returned since a group of us were ordered away from the hot corner late last fall.

QR September summary

We estimate that there was another 2000-5000 more uncounted broad-wings passing between us. That means there was around 30,000-35,000 broad-winged hawks that passed along southern Connecticut this year. American Kestrel: We've had a good last two years, ending each season with a little over 700. This year we are on track to do 300 less.

I didn't pluck out any Black Vultures of those seen while not driving, but a good estimate is over 25 Turkey Vultures and about 10 Red-tails. Including a massive tornado of 30+ birds over Rt-8 after going under I-84. There were dozens of Spring Azures, a pile of 4 Mourning Cloaks, and either a Comma or Tortoiseshell...too quick to tell.

I can echo this phenomenon - I would estimate we had over 50 here last fall.  In past winters, on warm winter days they would typically come out sample the feeder droppings, then disappear again.  But by late winter, on warm days I saw only one, on one occasion.  And since April, when they typically came out of hiding, again I have seen only one.

Re: [CT Birds] Interesting Day thus far at Quaker Ridge

After an hour and a half had gone by I estimated that well over 300 of the birds had passed the spot where I stood.  The birds were continually moving, as if propelled by some mighty unseen force, scarcely stopping to investigate my continuous squeaking.

The potential "reward" for silently cracking into the Google (or any cloud or hosting provider, for that matter) user information (especially PII) has been estimated to be well above $20K. The user list alone can possibly net that much, depending on who's buying and the list contents.
