Kingston Field Naturalists Regional Sightings for the Week Ending Dec. 5, '03

The flock was estimated at about 1,500 mostly GR. SCAUP with about 25% REDHEAD and a few LESSER SCAUP and RING-NECKED Ducks. A N. SHRIKE was atop a bush on the east side of Hwy 96 near the Simcoe I. Ferry Rd. Another Shrike was spotted near Base Line Rd and The 4th Line. .

Kevin counted and/or estimated the numbers below. He also is extremely interested in molts, plumages, aging, and subspecies. A. We had about 850 shorebirds at Townsend including: 1. 550 molting adult Lesser Yellowlegs, amazingly no juveniles for this date perhaps indicating a poor nesting season, we'll know for sure in a week or two. 2.

The waterfowl as reported on the 26th were still present (estimated 3,000 birds in the marsh) as well as two very large rafts of unidentified birds (5,000+) at the limit of visibility out on the lake. Predictions: An area of low pressure is moving out of the southern Mississippi valley this evening.

Some high numbers (many more were no doubt missed) include: Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 200+ (estimate) Swainson's Thrush - 92 Magnolia Warbler - 76 Red-eyed Vireo - 32 American Redstart - 28 Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 14 Etc.

On the 15th and 16th, a large number of Brant flew by Britannia and ended up on the Ottawa River at Remic rapids where an estimated 1000+ birds lingered briefly during strong NE winds and rain on the 16th. The 1st report of Black Tern in the marshes west of Masson, Quebec came in on the 15th.

On the tidal flats, we estimated ~5,000 shorebirds, many were far out and were unidentifiable and with strong NNW winds we didn’t want to wander too far out onto the flats.

Niagara River waterfowl this week included an estimated 8000 CANVASBACKS at the North Grand Island Bridge in Niagara Falls, New York. And on Lake Ontario, WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and LONG-TAILED DUCKS along the shore from Fort Niagara State Park in Porter to Olcott Beach.

[Ontbirds] Presqu'ile Birding Report for Week Ending November 19, 2009.

A conservative estimate of the number of BARRED OWLS in the Park this week is eight birds, but there are likely more than that. In addition one was struck by a car and has been taken for rehabilitation despite its emaciated condition.

After a quiet, wet and windy start to the week BOBOLINKS moved in earnest on the 24th and 25th when 96 and 131 were trapped, estimates for those two days were 200 and 250 seen. 10 BALTIMORE ORIOLES were seen on the 21st and PURPLE FINCHES have been seen twice this week.
