A great tool for exploring bird population changes over time is the Breeding Bird Survey Results and Analysis page: http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/bbs/ Simply click on the first "trend estimates" link, which leads you here: http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/bbs/specl05.html Choose the species in question and you get a whole list of areas that you can see

In a 1/3 mile stretch I was never far from a Swainson's that day, though estimating numbers would be difficult due to the fact that I was walking back and forth and probably pushing the same birds one way or the other. As I have noted on here before, I keep town lists in all 169 towns in CT, which is madness but it's fun madness.

Luckier waterfowl were 6 WOOD DUCKS, 6 HOODED MERGANSERS and 2 BUFFLEHEADS in a flooded swamp on Farnham Drive north of Belleville, and an estimated 5,000 scaups at Smith's Bay before the storm.

Several uncommon and rare gull species were among an estimated 10,000 BONAPARTE'S GULLS on the upper river off Fort Erie, Ontario, generally between the Peace Bridge and International Railroad Bridge. Adult BLACK-HEADED GULL was at close range on the north side of the marina in Fort Erie.

On the west river off Grand Island, December 23, an estimated 12,000 GREATER SCAUP, over 120 TUNDRA SWANS in two flocks, and at Beaver Island, L. BLACK-B. GULL. SNOWY OWLS were reported at two locations along Route 18 in the Lake Ontario Plains.

Also October 29, on the Niagara River, an estimated 20,000 BONAPARTE'S GULLS appeared between the Peace Bridge and Niagara Falls. At the falls, FRANKLIN'S GULL, BLACK-LEG. KITTIWAKE, 3 L. BLACK-B. GULLS and 4 LITTLE GULLS, plus PEREGRINE FALCON and MERLIN. At the Peace Bridge, 4 more LITTLE GULLS, 2 late TREE SWALLOWS and 7 late CHIMNEY SWIFTS.
