Meanwhile, access to online distance education programs has increased significantly in the past decade. Many academic institutions offer a wide variety of online courses and online degrees in STEM.

Featherstone said overall, she was pleased with the attendance, estimating that out of all the students that have applied for Greek for this semester, approximately 80 percent were in attendance. She also stressed the importance of hazing awareness for everyone involved, or who may become involved in Greek life.

An estimated 35 percent of Adventists are milk and egg-using vegetarians, according to Loma Linda. The study also noted that SDA vegetarian men tend to live three years longer than SDA men who eat meat. The message of good health should resonate louder in the African-American community where health disparities loom larger, said Knight.

A test-prep industry has also cropped up to coach high schoolers, with IBISWorld market research estimating annual revenue for tutoring and test prep businesses at $9 billion. The number of test preparation companies soared to 8,777 in 2013 from just under 2,900 in 1998, the U.S. Census Bureau reported.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) estimates that diabetes costs the county $245 billion annually, requiring each diabetic patient to spend about $13,700 a year. Moreover, diabetic patients tend to have more absenteeism and reduced or lost productivity in the workplace. Helping patients better manage this disease could save lives and money.

Claflin University Receives Gift of Painting from Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist Eugene Robinson and wife Avis Collins Robinson

Collins Robinson use of water-based paint and fabric adds to the uniqueness of the artwork which has an estimated value of $100,000. "It's a welcomed addition to historic Tingley Hall and Claflin University," said Marilyn Gibbs Drayton, head librarian at Claflin who worked with Tisdale and the Robinsons to bring the painting to Claflin.
