At $4.75 a gallon, Seattle City Light estimates that average oil customers will pay between $1,462 and $2,315 a year for heating, depending on their furnace's efficiency. Natural gas customers will pay between $461 and $730 annually, while customers with electric furnaces will pay about $1,023 annually.

The minimum estimate of breeding pairs east of the Rockies prior to 1940 is 350-400 pairs, with the possibility of two or three times this number being present. In the forward to reference #3 above, Roger Peterson writes, "By 1960 no one knew of a single active eyrie anywhere in the northeastern United States."

And there were small numbers of Brant, Black Ducks, etc. feeding as well. 11 March 2008 Charlie Barnard Stratford I estimated (by counting 300 birds one-by-one and then transposing that number onto the remaining birds) about 2000 gulls off of Long Beach in Stratford.
