Re: Reserve Power

That is about what I had estimated from the very excellent pictures that Mike Ford sent to me, but when you are aft looking forward, you are looking at the dead rise angle. That is not very relevant to our current discussion. Lots of semi-displacement boats and planing boats have a similar dead rise.

Re: Battery Capacity

Then estimate how long each will be running. All that data needs to be translated into ampere-hours at 12 volts and THEN you multiply THAT total by four to get the desired capacity of your house batteries. Then the capacity of your battery charger can be calculated from that (along with the running time of your genset).

I would estimate that most ducks can swim about twice that fast. The obvious conclusion is to put feathers on your hull, or to take a closer look at the theory. To do this we will generalized Equation 8.6 into; V = k (LWL)1/2 If this equation is solved for k and plotted against resistance of hulls, a sort of "S" shaped curve is developed.

We have not done any more than the initial layout of Doulos II's hydraulic system, and that for the purpose of estimating costs. (We will work out the details later, when we actually do the installation.) I had pretty well laid it out myself before I showed it to the specialist. In a single day of working with it, he cut the cost by 30,000 dollars.

The time required to communicate, to answer many peoples' seemingly endless preliminary questions about boats and about boat design, to provide estimates, and to keep the business side of things alive here, takes fully two thirds of my actual working hours.

Having once worked as a furnace service man helper I estimate the cost of a service call would be the same. The question now becomes how many hours would you run per year. If you have to service the internal combustion driven genset more than once a year then the cost comparison favors the Whispergen.

It also gives us a rough estimate of how many hours we can continue to run until the battery bank is depleted. It is a lot like the fuel computer on some of the up-market cars, except this one is for electricity. So, we are totally reliant upon our generator set. There are more hours on the generator set than there are on the main engine.

Based on the work I've had done recently on my 1987 BMW 635, I would estimate that if I were to have a junker 635 completely restored, paying market prices for the parts, assembly, painting, etc., the total cost of the parts and labor would far exceed the original purchase price of the car, which in 1987 was in the neighborhood of $50,000 (I am not the original

It also contains a very succinct primer on making molds, using gel coat and laying up fiberglass including estimating quantities. For bulk resin and other fiberglass products I recommend, if possible, you suck up to a local boat builder or fiberglass repair service and give him a small fee (10%) to buy at wholesale through them.

Hull inspection at haul out showed the presence >of multiple blisters (estimated by the surveyor at about 125-150 on each >side) on all underwater surfaces of 3/8" to 5/8" diameter.
