A beautiful day to start our Fall Island Birding. Another words after so long being a stay at home – AT LAST.
Toady Bob Tyler, Margaret Liubavicius and I birded Hanlan’s Point to the Trout Pond and following are a few of the birds we found, some of them clearly migrants.
Trumpeter Swans, Great Blue Heron, Great Egrets, Wood Ducks, Turkey Vulture, 2 American Kestrels, Caspian and Common Terns ( most of the Common Terns have now left, we only saw 4), Chimney Swifts, Belted Kingfisher, Lest Flycatchers, 48 Eastern Kingbird (some of them moving west), Many Tree and Barn Swallows early in the morning, 3 Red-breasted Nuthatches, House Wrens, 11 Gray Catbirds, Brown Thrasher, Northern Mockingbird, 75+ Cedar Waxwings, Warbling Vireos, Tennessee Warbler, Yellow Warblers, an early Yellow-rumped Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Palm Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, Canada Warbler, a few Song Sparrows and a couple of Baltimore Orioles.
It’s Only Just Begun.
Yesterday, August 17th Bob Tyler found a American Bittern at the Trout Pond and Sandhill Crane over The Islands.
Note:- All 3 washrooms are open on Hanlan’s as is the one at the city side of the docks but the washroom on the ferry is closed due to Corvid. Some but not all of the water fountains are working but you can obtain water in the washrooms and the Mermaid Café was open when we were there today where you can purchase soft drinks, snacks, etc. The café is just south of the Tennis Courts on Hanlan’s Point.
You can obtain ferry schedules, prices, restrictions, etc. at - https://www.toronto.ca/explore-enjoy/parks-gardens-beaches/toronto-island-park/all-ferry-schedules/
Good Luck if you choose to bird The Islands.
