Accidental spills of dangerous materials and past business practices have contaminated land and water throughout the state.  The Toxics Cleanup Programhttp://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/tcp/cleanup.html (TCP) works to remedy these situations, which range from cleaning up contamination from leaking underground storage tanks, to large, complex projects requiring engineering solutions.  Our mission is to get and keep contaminants out of the environment.

The program's Tacoma Smelter Plume Unit in Lacey, WAhttp://www.ci.lacey.wa.us/ is looking for a Tacoma Smelter Plume Outreach Coordinator (Community Outreach & Environmental Education Specialist 3). This is a project position that is funded until June 2021.

This position is open until filled, with intitial screening on December 26, 2012.  In order to be considered for initial screening, please submit an application on or before December 25, 2012.  The agency reserves the right to make an appointment anytime after the initital screening date.

The Tacoma Smelter Plume (TSP) yard cleanup program is a high priority project for the Toxics Cleanup Program covering two regions Northwest Regional Office (NWRO) and Southwest Regional Office (SWRO). The TSP yard cleanup program is an element of the complex TSP project. The TSP yard cleanup program is focused on soil sampling and remediation of residential properties and multi-family housing.

This position reports to the TSP project manager and coordinates with the TSP Yard Program Manager, providing outreach and administrative support for the TSP yard cleanup program. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the TSP team members to ensure that homeowners and residents are educated about the cleanup process.

Tasks include:

  • Point of contact for homeowner and resident concerns during the soil sampling and cleanup process
  • Support soil sampling contractors in providing outreach for homeowners and residents
  • Complete home visits with the Field Coordinator to help homeowners understand their cleanup plan
  • Work with Master Gardener to help homeowners choose a yard restoration plan
  • Coordinate with local health departments to answer health questions from the public
  • Coordinate the mailing of yard cleanup program information and forms for homeowners

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree involving major study in environmental, physical or natural science, education, communications or closely related field.

AND

Three years of professional experience involving environmental analysis or control, environmental planning, environmental education, community outreach, or communications activities and conflict resolution.

OR

Equivalent education and/or experience will substitute, year for year, for the requirements above.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) public involvement process

Initial 40-hour hazardous materials training followed by an annual 8-hour refresher
