Mine is a 52 footer, James Krogen design, built by Charley Morgan in St'
Petersburg in 1972. A few years befor the Kadey influence (over seas,
cheaper stuff). It is similar to the 54, but the last 2 foot at the stern is
chopped off, above the waterline about a foot. It looks like a flat stern,
sorta. Mr. Krogen designed a very stout boat and Mr. Morgan built it that
way. The hull weighs 37,000 lbs. It even has high density foam stringers
heavily glassed in to the hull, no rot there. It was truly made for offshore
passages.

Interesting! Was it a one off design or were there
others built? I presume it has a fiberglass hull,
with probably glass over plywood topsides. I would
love to see this boat. Any pictures anywhere?

It was a molded boat, I'll ask Charley how many they built but Mine may have
been the only one of the Atlantic model. James Krogens company name then was
Traditional Yachts, he designed and supervised the building of quite a few
yachts, some even on ferro cement, or wood. I don't know of any steel boats.
Mr Krogen's designs were easier to build in glass or cement, at least for
the yachts. He called it form stabilized and he didn't allow for ease of
construction. He specced a lot of things in the hull that are common today
but in 1972 were unheard of. The boat is going through a major refit and
reconstruction now, I have been in contact with James Krogen's son Jimmy
Krogen and he has been very helpfull, he now runs the company. He sent an
article from a 1973 Motor Boating and Sailing magazine that was actually
about this very boat, sort of a debut of the model, very interesting, to me
anyway. They still have all the drawings, blueprints, building notes and sea
tests on this boat. Jimmy is a really great guy. This boat looks like a
Krogen 42 only proportionately larger. It seems to me that when the design
went overseas it was built much cheaper with less than ideal components and
materials, Krogen being a no compromise designer and Kadey being a
supersalesman no doudt caused a few clashes, but the money was good, and the
boats were ok. Maybe when I am finished with the refit I can put all the
info together, if anyone besides me is interested.
