Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threads We did the great loop in 2002-2003 in a 40 foot carver aft cabin. We
had no problems and I would do it again in that hull. We had no damage to our
running gear doing the entire loop. While our hull is a planning hull, we
found that you can actually cruise at hull displacement speed (trawler speed)
in these boats, it is not a performance requirement to go on plane.

Good morning, Gary and list.
Your comments are very interesting to me, as I plan
(hope?) to do the loop in a Carver 355 Aft Cabin that
is 39' plus overall length. I have forgotten just what
Carver model "Calypso Poet" is. Do (did) you have gas
or Diesel engines? My boat is gasoline-powered and
fuel consumption is a bit of a worry, but since I don't
plan to do the loop more than once, fuel is probably
of lesser expense than changing boats and as John
Gill has said, repowering does not make sense.
Do you have at least an estimate of your fuel usage
per mile?
We are probably going to make an auto trip next
weekend to check out one or two marinas on the
Tenn-Tom for possibility of a permanent home for
our boat after I retire.
