TALLEST AND WIDEST 43-FOOTER LAUNCHED
When he created the Nova Scotia 43, Captain Curt Marsh wanted a 14-knot
raised pilothouse coastal cruiser that would stand out in the marketplace.
On that count, he certainly has succeeded.
His is the tallest and widest 43 ever built.
With air draft of 16 feet with the mast lowered, the Nova Scotia towers
over a Krogen 42's 14 feet and a Selene 43's 14 feet 2 inches. With a beam
of 17 feet, the Nova Scotia is much wider than the Krogen at 15 feet and
the Selene 43 at 15 feet 8 inches.
The result is a most spacious 43 that appeals to buyers--six have placed
orders so far--but occasionally raises eyebrows about stability, a question
that Capt. Curt dismisses by pointing to the boat's broad beam, the fact
that most of the weight is low, and the hull's years of service in the
North Atlantic in fishing boats.
The height of the boat translates into full headroom everywhere, which is
especially noticeable in the pilothouse and master stateroom below it. The
beam means accommodations are roomy and the engine room is truly huge.
The Nova Scotia 43 and its stretched sibling, the Nova Scotia 49, are built
in New Brunswick in the Canadian Maritimes. The Nova Scotia refers to the
style of fishing boat from whence comes the hull. The builder, Magna
Marine, has been building fishing vessels and custom boats for 25 years.
Capt. Curt, who conceptualized and designed the Nova Scotia, owns Regatta
Pointe Yacht Sales in Palmetto, Florida, where Hull #1 does service as a
demonstrator. Hull #2 will be launched next week at St. John, New
Brunswick, on the Bay of Fundy and then brought down the east coast on its
own bottom. One 49 is under construction for a customer.
Boats can also be trucked across Canada to the west coast, with the
superstructure separate from the hull until the destination is reached.
Capt. Curt also has designed a 58-footer called the Marsh Harbour Edition.
It's essentially the same hull extended aft.
NOVA SCOTIA 43 FEATURES AND SPECS
An hour spent aboard Hull #1 at West Marine Trawler Fest in Melbourne
revealed a boat on which time had been lavished during construction. The
outfit and finish are excellent.
Most impressive is the air-conditioned engine room with 6 feet 8 inches of
headroom and a pilothouse that looks large enough to belong on a
50-to-60-footer. The love seat on the Portuguese bridge should prove to be
a delight.
According to Capt. Curt, the features his customers find appealing include:
-- How quiet the vessel is under way.
-- Large walk-in, cedar-lined hanging lockers that are air-conditioned.
-- The option of a king-size, walk-around bed in the master stateroom.
-- Whisper-flush electric heads.
-- Only one shower to keep clean.
-- Large temperature-controlled wine cellar and commissary.
-- Headroom throughout the boat.
-- Beech wood interior in light honey color.
-- Exterior Dutch doors.
-- Electrical connectors bow and stern.
-- The go-anywhere ambiance created by a 10-foot-high bow.
-- Oversized, high exterior rails.
-- Wide, clear side decks port and starboard.
-- Large, wide, functional boarding gates, port, starboard and stern.

LOGAN 33 AN UNUSUAL OFFERING FROM NEW ZEALAND
Three friends who served together in the Canadian Navy as senior officers
have formed Heritage Launch Inc. to import the Logan 33 from New Zealand to
North America.
The Logan is a faithful reproduction of a 1912 motor launch. The lines are
exact, as the molds for the fiberglass hull are taken directly from the
original wooden boat which is still in service.
The Logan may not look like your average trawler yacht but it is very much
a displacement powerboat, ballasted with lead, intended for cruising in
coastal waters. No beamy heavyweight in the contemporary idiom, the Logan
is 8 feet wide and displaces 7,062 pounds. As a result, the Logan slips
through the water easily at hull speed, 7.6 knots, driven by a
40-horsepower Yanmar inboard diesel. The bonus is that it's trailerable.
The Logan 33 will be on display in Newport International Boat Show at
Newport, Rhode Island, September 12-15.
"Our one-boat-only show special price for a new 2003 Logan 33, equipped
with every option offered and delivered in time for next year's boating
season, will be $159,000, as against a list price of $179,800," said Fred
Blair, one of the three partners in Heritage Launch. "Incidentally, that
includes air tickets to New Zealand to break a bottle of champagne across
the bow of your new boat before setting off for sea trials in the beautiful
Bay of Islands."
Heritage North, the demonstrator boat at the show, will be offered for
$124,900. No trip to New Zealand at that price.

WEST MARINE OPENS FIRST STORES OUTSIDE THE U.S.
West Marine, the largest retailer of recreational and commercial boating
supplies in the U.S., is expanding outside of the U.S. for the first time
by opening two stores in Canada, both in cruising destinations in British
Columbia, and hinting at more outlets north of 40.
Sidney, gateway to the Gulf Islands, offers a wealth of recreational
boating and fishing activities close to the bustle of Victoria on Vancouver
Island, and Vancouver is world famous for its pristine rivers and coastal
waters. The Sidney store is located at 2210 Beacon Avenue, and the
Vancouver store is at 1601 West 2nd Avenue.
"Meaningful growth and expansion are as much a part of the West Marine
tradition as outstanding service and selection," says Michelle Farabaugh,
senior vice-president, marketing and strategic planning. "In Sidney and
Vancouver, we see two areas surrounded by enthusiastic boating communities,
which could benefit from a stronger presence in the boating supplies
market. We believe many regions throughout Canada share a similar position
and we hope to eventually accommodate them by entering the market through
British Columbia."
Now more than 240 stores strong, West Marine got off to a humble start 34
years ago when founder Randy Repass started selling rope to fellow boaters
out of his garage in Sunnyvale, California.
