I started similarly - I was a "Scholar Attorney" in Montgomery County when I started, and I was moved around in a similar fashion (in the same division, even).  Ten years in two county governments later, I definitely see the benefits of that practice.  Here in Genesee County, there are only two attorneys.  As a result, we have to be competent in many different fields of law.  I might be working on a FOIA case today, but yesterday I was reviewing contracts and intergovernmental agreements.  Tomorrow I will be assisting the Treasurer to collect property taxes out of a bankruptcy, and the day after I might be advising HR on a personnel issue.

The utility infielder approach you describe in Montgomery County provided me the opportunity to prepare for the mercurial nature of a small municipal practice.  At the same time, I was blessed with a number of great mentors who I could turn to for advice, assistance, and opportunities to work on interesting issues.

As a side note, I would be interested in participating in monthly calls.

Best regards,
Andy

Subject: [Younglawyers] New Attorney

Hello fellow young lawyers:

I recently started working for Montgomery County in the finance and procurement division.  I was hired as a sort of "utility infielder" to cover areas where the division needs extra hands on deck.  So I spend a lot of time jumping from case to case.  Just starting out, I think it is a good thing to be flexible to the County's needs because it allows me to dip my toes in several different pools and try new areas of the law.  I was wondering if anyone else out there was hired under similar circumstances, and how they felt about it.  It also might be helpful to set up monthly phone calls like the other IMLA listservs have to talk about issues for young attorneys.  It would be nice to connect with other attorneys at the same stage in their careers.

Best,
Tagg
