Hard to believe that anything more could go wrong to upset my apple-cart
with reference to the purchase of the LRC, but I just got the following
information from my Diesel Surveyor as a result of the oil analysis:
Both Detroits show high soot and chrome wear as result of excess
idling or slow operation plus copper and lead indicating
bearing wear. The Starboard Detroit also has saltwater in the oil.
The Westerbeke Gen-set also has high soot level and sodium content
in the oil, could be saltwater, but how it got there is beyond me.
Onan shows cylinder wear from age and over fueling.
Beginning to look like I am going to be boat shopping again!

Sorry to hear this, Jim, but it sounds to me like you've just found out
(and shown the rest of us) exactly why one does a survey before buying
a boat.
Here's hoping you find something in slightly better condition.
I've refrained from commenting in the past few days due to the excellent
advice from other TWL listees, but all along I've felt ....
"RUN, DON'T WALK"
FROM THIS BOAT!!!!!
Unless you want to spend more dollars than you ever thought possible and
more time than you most likely have left on this earth, keep looking for a
boat you can enjoy vs. a boat that you will curse for the rest of your
days!!!

Jim, look at it this way: The oil analysis made the decision and easy one
for you.

I vote that we shoot the "professional Captain!" Do I hear a second?

Nah, shooting is too good for him - make him walk the plank!

Jim,
In contrast, my 58 LRC purchased from third owner in 2001 was very clean.
All four diesels still run great after 9,000 miles.
I think it is very unusual to find LRCs in as poor shape as yours. Unless
you enjoy working on them as much as cruising (and I know many who do), take
a pass.
This is not too say you shouldn't make a rock bottom offer before you go...

Just think Jim, your a shoe in for a chapter in Joe Engles book on boat
buying.
Sorry to inject humor its my way. But it sounds like too much work for the
money and time allowance. There are 49 of these and you know there are 7 on
the market, although 3 of those will need 650' of chain. (West Coast).
If it was me, Double all fix it up estimates and bid if you have time to
get the work done. Then you'll know everything is new and done properly. I
for one would not ever have the buyer fix anything unless I knew exactly
what yard was doing it and could check. Or go see the other boats. Tell me
when you go to look I'm ready for some warm weather and one seems to be in
the Bahamas.
