4/17 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center, 10 am-1PM, high tide
receding, 55 F, sunny.
Very busy at the center today because school is out for the week.
At 10 am the female osprey was on the nest. She was there all morning. At
11:25am, she began calling and then the male returned with a fish. He
chowed down on the fish for over an hour on the perch, and by 12:40pm he
was on the nest with her and whatever was left of the fish. They chased
off a third osprey.
On the marsh: conservative estimate of 200 Brant on the marsh, continuing
all morning, 6 American Black ducks, 12 Mute swans, 4 Red Breasted
Mergansers, 4 Cormorants flew over.
On the grounds & feeders:
6 Tree swallows (one nest box is battling House sparrow intruders), 2
Purple Martins, 4 House finches, (one male with the orange coloration), 2
American Goldfinches, 9 Common Grackles (1 was collecting dried grasses), 6
Mourning Doves, 1 singing Carolina Wren,
1 Song sparrow, 3 American Crows, 2 Northern Cardinals.
