hello trawler list.

ome of you may remember the story of our trawler from last
year...  essentially, my wife and i bought our first trawler - a
1979 42' north sea - at a considerable discount, but with significant
repair issues... everything from systems to engine to rot.  we spent
the first year on systems and the engine, and as of 2 months ago,
have hired a shipwright and are no taking on the rot.  and it's ugly...

what looked like (from all estimates) a 6 week and $10,000 project
has turned into a $30,000+ 6 month project.  once we opened the
boat up we found far more rot than anyone thought.  the curse of the
taiwan trawler...

there is rot ALL throughout the decks (teak on top of thin glass on
top of plywood), all throughout the house, and into the flybridge.
we've taken all the decks off, all windows have come out, major support
beams and stringers have needed replacing, etc...like i said, it's ugly.

o when it's all said and done, we'll have a trawler that we purchased
for $55,000, and have dropped $45,000 into over 18 months.  and, too,
when we're done, the resale value should about equal what we put into
the boat, give or take $5,000.  provided, of course, the northwest
trawler market stays strong...

with all that said, we are thinking through some issues, and i would
appreciate feedback from any and all.

  1. windows.  i haven't seen any discussion on windows on this list
and am wondering what kinds of tinting your windows have.  we're
considering keeping the windshield and small fwd side windows clear,
and then tinting the rest a nice grey.  also thinking about silver...
do any of you have silver windows on your trawler?

  2. teak decks.  at this stage in the game, it seems best for us to keep all
the decks, but one option is to keep the teak on the main decks, and then
put non-skid on the mid-level decks fore and aft.  we've taken all the
decking up and are planning on cleaning and repairing each piece, planing
them down, re-drilling, and the bedding them.  it might save us a bit of
    money
to NOT put the teak back down on the mid-decks, but resalve

  3. resale issues.  since we're taking things down so far and have the
    option
to do some updating, what items do you think are important in thinking
about the resale value of a 1979 taiwan trawler?  ANY ideas valued.

thanks all.
