Idlewild 01/30/06: Contrary wind and current

GK
Georgs Kolesnikovs
Mon, Jan 30, 2006 12:27 PM

Date/time: Jan 30, 2006 12:00 local
Position at noon:        34°47' S & 076°38' E
noon to noon:            135.1  nm
Avg. speed:                5.6  kts
Course bearing:        88°T
Sea state & wx:        E 11 kts, NE 10 feet, sunny periods & some cloud
Crew:                    Ben, Brad, & Kevin
Days:                    17 days from East London
Goal:                    to Fremantle Australia
To go:                  about 2100 nm

Remarks:

East wind last 24 hours at 15 to 20 kts so we slowed for 8 hours to reduce
pounding.  We picked up RPM now but our speed is still not up where it
should be.  We learned in the Arctic that local winds of 20 kts for 20 hours
can produce 1 kt of current and we think that is what we have here.
