I'm hauling tomorrow, the primary reason is a failing torsional
coupler. This is the device, sometimes called a damper, that lives
between the flywheel of my 6BT and the input shaft of the Twin Disc
MG5050 gear. I replaced mine in 2012, about 1800 hrs ago. The OEM
coupler made 4800 hrs. I suspect the failure, a bit premature, was
hastened by an oil leak that originated from the input shaft of the
gear. An O-ring provides a seal for that splined shaft at the back of
the coupler, the O-ring dislodged during assembly, unbeknownst to me
until I discovered oil in the drip pan. About a qt per day from GA to
the Chesapeake, only for the quick trip there, when I replaced the
O-ring, but the rubber elements in the coupler don't like oil, and they
had a pretty good bath. I'll know more upon disassembly and post mortem,
but it is a reasonable conclusion.
My conversation with Centa focused on probable cause and best remedy.
They concurred that my DS (dual stage) coupler does not like oil, that I
could send them pieces for analysis, they can also refurbish the
coupler. They also advised that there is a newer "R" series coupler that
is still progressive, but uses a different design that allows for field
replacement of the elements, is more robust, generally less vibration
and has 6 elements spaced over a wider diameter than the DS. It's also
about 70% more cost, and is not stocked. It has a 4-5 week lead time
from the factory in Germany. They emailed a quote and a full cut sheet
of the coupler, the quote included the new "R" series, a replacement
"DS" series, as well as cost to refurbish my existing coupler. The "R"
series is more robust, so I pulled the trigger on the new design despite
being a bit more than $850 with shipping. The order was placed 3/20, it
gave an estimated ship date of 4/25, and we discussed options to
expedite. Shipping was the only variable in lead time, and $270 in
direct air shipping from Germany would shave a week off delivery time.
Not worthwhile to me.
My point here is to share the level of service Centa provided from
initial contact through delivery, which the tracking indicates will be
tomorrow, the 27th. Every email was answered promptly, they actually
read my emails gauging from their response, and replies to people who
were out for the day were promptly answered by another staff member who
was versed on the order and was able to reply with an appropriate
answer. Every question was answered thoroughly and promptly. I sent a
follow up email the week prior to estimated ship, and was assured that
"I would have it next week". I was expecting it early the following week
based on UPS from IL, so scheduled the haul to straddle best/worst case
delivery. I received an unsolicited email confirmation when the part
shipped out. Tracking indicates arrival tomorrow, fully 2 business days
ahead of what I anticipated, so I'm tickled that I won't be sitting on
the hard awaiting a part that was promised and not delivered, as so
often happens in this situation. This is my 2nd time dealing with
Centa, I've been thoroughly impressed with their service and heartily
recommend them.
