Join the Foss Waterway Seaport and Tacoma Art Museum for a new and exciting
teacher workshop where we will combine science with art, allowing
participating educators to experience interdisciplinary activities that
embrace creative thinking while delving into both the scientific and the
artistic world. Science allows one to see the beauty in discovery; art
allows one to expand the mind. This workshop series is perfect for formal
educators, non-formal educators, school district personnel and members of
teacher-preparation programs.
The workshop series will focus on "hands-on" learning and curriculum
integration on topics such as ocean acidification, use of real-time data,
underwater sounds, ROVs (Remote Operated Vehicles - make an ROV during this
workshop), plankton, marine debris, and microplastics. Participants will
experience one day of learning aboard our research vessel My Girl and three
days on land, with two days of marine science and two days expanding that
knowledge through visual interpretation with educators at the Tacoma Art
Museum. Foss Waterway Seaport will provide teachers with the opportunity to
collect and analyze data from Puget Sound, while also discussing the latest
trends in science. At Tacoma Art Museum, teachers will create art inspired
by the Northwest environment and hear about artists who work with marine
debris art. Workshop participants will come away with many new ideas and a
wealth of resources, plus this workshop series will be just plain fun!
Plan to explore the intersection of art and science, and look at Tacoma Art
Museum's collections and exhibitions in a new way, in a partnered teacher
professional development series. Come join us for this first ever
combination of science and art...a learning event you just don't want to
miss!
Feel free to pass this message on to teachers who might be interested in
this workshop.
