Visitors:
We thank today's observers for their efforts and those interested in the
ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level
of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The
2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe
precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
The cloud increased throughout the day, with the temperature starting at 7c
and rising to 13c at midday, falling a couple of degrees by the end. The
wind mostly light, started in the north turned south by midday and ended up
in the east. Visibility was generally good but a bit hazy mid morning.
Raptor Observations:
Turkey Vulture (297) numbers increased today probably with the help of the
early north wind, as did Red-tailed Hawks (222) and Red-shouldered Hawks
(52). The highlights of the day were a seasons best (so far) of 9 Golden
Eagles passing north, and 2 Rough-legged Hawks, both light phase. All other
species were in single figures and unfortunately, no falcons.
Non-raptor Observations:
Good numbers of Horned Larks (35), Eastern Bluebirds (95), Cedar Waxwings
(114) and American Goldfinches (273) flew past today. American Crows were a
little down at 1,180, Blackbirds are present but in lower numbers. Five
varieties of sparrow were present around the Tower, but in low numbers.
Ducks are generally maintaining their numbers, but Ring-necked Ducks (1650)
were lower today. Waterbirds are hanging on with low numbers. The list is
at https://ebird.org/checklist/S97410418
Predictions:
Tomorrow is forecast to be windy from the south and overcast, with rain
developing during the afternoon. We will be lucky to maintain the numbers
seen today, hopefully the rain will hold off until late afternoon. This may
give a chance for some migration over the midday period.
