Water depth at Steinhatchee

Kevin Colson said that Steinhatchee is impassable, Suwannee OK for boats
with less than 3 ft draft. We agree with the latter (AT HIGH TIDE), but
disagree with the former. We went into Steinhatchhee on December 7 at 4:30
p.m. (High tide 4:07 p.m.)and found 5+ ft all the way in. We left at 1:00
p.m. on Dec 9 (low tide 11:04 a.m., high tide 5:27 p.m.) and still saw 4+ ft
all the way out.

On Dec 10 we visited Cedar Key between about about 8:30 a.m. And 10:30 a.m.
(low tide 11:30 a.m.)and found 5+ ft all the way in the north channel and
more out the south channel.

We went into Crystal River at about 2:30 p.m.on Dec 10 (low tide 2:42 p.m.)
with 4+ ft all the way in (we did have a problem in Kings Bay, but that was
bad skippering).

In summary, it was only Suwannee that was a real problem.

Don't forget the "rule of twelfths" to estimate
the depth.  Depth increases or decreases about
1/12 of the total range for each 1/6th of the
time between low and high tide.  First "hour"
brings chage of 1/12, second brings another
2/12 (1/6), third period 3/12, fourth another
3/12, fifth 2/12 and finally last period finishes
off the final 1/12.

In Patrick's case leaving Steinhatchee about 2
hours after low tide) the depth should have
been 1/3 of the way between low to high tide.

I think one of the events overlooked here was the "new moon" effect on the
tides.

We were in the Applachicola area around this time last year waiting to make
the crossing and we witnesses the New Moon phenomena and it's effect on the
tides were remarkable. Took away an additional foot of water beyond the
published tables.
