Hello NCL members,

Our friends at the Urban Institute have just released a new brief that uses data from the 2018 Well-Being and Basic Needs Survey. The key takeaway is that 1 in 6 adults in immigrant families report that they or a family member avoided routine activities due to immigration concerns in 2018.

Many of those routine activities were things that would prevent adult learners from getting to class -- such as driving a car, going to public places such as libraries, using public transportation, or talking to teachers or school officials.

Here is a link to the brief: https://urbn.is/2SC31aL

While these findings were worse for families with a more vulnerable citizenship status (i.e., at least one foreign-born member isn’t a permanent resident or naturalized citizen), they were still pretty bad even for families where ALL MEMBERS ARE PERMANENT RESIDENTS OR US CITIZENS, with 12 percent of this group avoiding routine activities.
