Hi Brian,
Thanks for the comments.
Yes our 55ft powercat project is still rolling along in China with our
Taiwanese builder, Aussie Naval Architect and I'm still the foolish Kiwi
bankrolling it all! I know Powercats aren't the smartest way to make money
but hey, you have a great time trying! The bleeding edge of design is the
place to be for satisfaction returns, not financial return.
I have just received my first 3 boat delivery for stock from this very
experienced builder, a new 33ft Retro Picnic style walkaround mono we
designed for them on one of their existing hulls, a 45ft Trawler Grand Banks
type mono face lifted on one of their existing designs and a 58ft Pilothouse
cruiser, also a facelift on one of their designs they build for the US.
(Over 450 boats built to date Taiwan and China) Had a busy year building 4
mono's while trying to design a cat range as well. The result has been good-
excellent workmanship and finish, been away the past 3 weeks on the 58
footer with very few teething issues, a credit to their thoroughness in the
build and their patience with our overhaul of the original spec. The 5800
pilothouse mono has a lot in common with regards to equipment and layout as
the new cat range.

The new Powercat design in its very early form is on our website,
www.adventurebay.co.nz under the powercat section along with pictures of 4
of our mono's to show the workmanship as described.(5800 Pilothouse, 4500
Trawler, Newport 3300 Picnic and a Nordic 3200 Picnic boat from another
Shanghai yard)
We are doing 3 superstructure versions for the 55ft Powercat and 2
underwater hull versions, planing and displacement. Should have renderings
complete in a few weeks along with 3d models. Basically offering 6 different
boats on the same layout to suit Trawler, Euro, or Classic tastes to cruise
slow (15-25kts) or cruise fast(25-45kts). Styling/layout is my own, Naval
Architecture from an Australian Cat Specialist Chris Tucker (Originally
Perth Cat fast ferry builder and lately NZ based designing for Roger Hill
and Warwick Yacht Design), Tank Testing most likely to be conducted in South
Africa 2nd quarter of this year. A full time Powercat veteran has to be on
the shop floor 12 months as they build the first demo boats to show them
where Cats differ to mono's and I visit every 2 months to check all is how
we want it for the market we are seeking- the Nordhavn/Marlow/Ocean Alex
buyer seeking a Cat platform, without the weight. Weight saving is the
biggest change in thinking for most builders doing Cats along with a million
other little details to make up the full picture. Our builder now has many
of the finer finishing details sorted. I believe enough in them that they're
just about to start us a 65 foot Express Trawler mono for stock. Just wish
it was on 2 hulls! Still, the best things take time!
Anyone who wants more info or general offshore build advice, contact me off
list on john@adventurebay.co.nz
