Butch,

The two chain counters I know of that work on the principle you cite are marked by Maxwell and Lewmar, and, other than the nameplates, they're identical.  I have a Maxwell 3500 vertical windlass and the Maxwell version of the chain counter, and it's worked perfectly for me since it was installed during commissioning.  I'd estimate that we've anchored perhaps 200 times with the unit from Florida to Venezuela to Maine to the Mediterranean and it has not malfunctioned yet.  I'm not sure what you mean by remote control, but mine is installed in the pilothouse, though the windlass can be operated from either the foredeck or the pilothouse.

Having done it the old fashioned way with leather markers, colored tie-wraps, and painted chain on previous boats, I can tell you there's nothing like a chain-counter . . . I LOVE MINE!  No reliability problems whatsoever.  This is really simple technology, so if it's installed correctly there are few opportunities for "reliability" problems.
