Thanks, Jeff and Sharon. Grim but important news.

My new colleague Rachel Vilsack, who came to NSC from Minnesota's
Department of Employment and Economic Department, has just put out a new
blog post on education and workforce data
https://nationalskillscoalition.org/news/blog/making-a-covid-19-case-for-workforce-data
.

She notes that some states -- Minnesota and North Dakota among them -- have
public data dashboards that allow you to see the demographics of workers
who filed for unemployment that week. Fully 3 in 10 newly unemployed
individuals in MN have a high school credential or less.

If folks have been following Strada's weekly COVID-19 worker survey data
https://www.stradaeducation.org/publicviewpoint/?_hsmi=87479195&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8Ig9UvjHp4V_BZHXWC2Q6mu9PCnQuOCLoJwBmldrI-ZdtLOQQeZT7I-eV7Dops1yMB9si5&utm_medium=email&utm_content=87479195&utm_source=hs_email,
there is interesting information there too. In particular, stats on the
number of Americans who prefer non-degree/skill-based learning programs,
and those who are looking for online options.

Most likely everyone has seen the headlines regarding the April job report
this morning.

Most relevant for this group:

The unemployment rate for workers with only a high school diploma
increased by 12.9%.

The unemployment rate for workers without a high school diploma increased
by 14.4%.

I think I've always been under the impression that increasing unemployment
generates more demand for adult education but I can't remember what kind of
data there is to back that up. Any data from last recession that could be
used to produce a model for what might happen this time?

At the same time, the damage to state and local budgets will likely be
many, many times worse than during the last recession. So I would expect
cuts to adult education programs could be even more severe than it was back
then.

Apologies if a lot of this has already been discussed, but curious what
others are thinking.

Jeff
