Spaceworks Tacoma announces Encompass, a dual exhibition by Elise Richman and Nicholas Nyland at the 950 Gallery, two artists who embrace the encompassing, expansive potential of abstraction. These Tacoma-based artists have collaboratively produced a site-specific exhibit that takes its cues from the gallery's particular spaces and architectural details. Select works by each artist relate to the collaborative installation pieces.

By giving the architecture and fixtures an active role in the artwork, Nyland and Richman engage in a multi-faceted collaborative process, playfully riffing off the gallery's space, their personal practices and modernist traditions such as minimalism, Constructivism, and the Light and Space movement. The installations include: a bright, mural sized dimensional drawing inspired by a pair of unassuming pipes that straddles one corner of the gallery; a video projection in the media room that captures footage of a small scale model of that space suffused in animated colored light; a hovering column of multi-colored thread that echoes a nearby column; a dynamic sculpture on an upside down plinth overlaid with a projected colorful geometric design; and two cellophane grids, each respectively illuminated by natural and florescent light.

Color and light activate the space, illuminating often overlooked details that infuse architectural spaces with character. Furthermore, the installations embody the mutable, context based nature of color, directly interacting with the gallery's lighting as it shifts throughout the day.
