Good morning everyone,

I’m participating in a webinar this week on how to raise awareness of issues related to immigrants and refugees and their adult education needs as state WIOA plans begin to be released and vetted. I have a few ideas about this, but I thought I would throw this question out to this group for your insights. What do you think? Anyone planning anything? Happy to pass your thought and ideas along…

We need other or additional goals besides get a job.

  • learn English
  • improve parenting (i.e.: read to kids)
  • volunteer ( a good pre employment activity)
  • civic engagement
  • make Ed gains (other ways besides one test)

That's it for now-- hope to listen in too!
Thanks for asking

Hello,
I would echo what my esteemed colleague Regina has noted. I believe the jobs they seek/procure should provide some opportunities for advancement or movement along a career pathway.
Thanks,

Learning the language is a key to integrating into a new culture. If you
can't communicate, you are isolated, cannot understand and participate in
day to day activities, whether health, children's education. Certainly,
this also applies to employment, integrating into, and then advancing in,
the workplace environment. We are the land of opportunity but without
language and education, opportunities are limited.

I concur with all these: language, laws, health information, financial
literacy, civic engagement, supported career pathways.

mostdiverse census
tract in all of America. To become an inclusive community, Leadership
Anchorage is developing a Citizen's Academy targeting immigrant and refugee
populations.

Building off what's been shared re: language acquisition, I gave a presentation recently on first language literacy and its role in new language acquisition. An implication for practice is the importance of assessing ELL students' literacy experiences in their first language and providing a spectrum of ELL services to meet students' needs along a continuum of first language literacy.

I echo all of what has been shared - but the reality is that these life
skills mentioned support being able to get and keep a job, and without them
the focus on employment alone is futile  - if you are unable to acclimate
to American culture and perform many of the civic duties and life skills
mentioned, one's ability to get and keep a job for self-sufficiency will
not happen, or won't happen in a sustainable way - just as it won't happen
if we don't focus on these same kinds of things with our ABE/ASE population.

Good morning everyone,

I¹m participating in a webinar this week on how to raise awareness of
issues related to immigrants and refugees and their adult education needs
as state WIOA plans begin to be released and vetted. I have a few ideas
about this, but I thought I would throw this question out to this group
for your insights. What do you think? Anyone planning anything? Happy to
pass your thought and ideas alongŠ

I echo all of what has been shared - but the reality is that these life skills mentioned support being able to get and keep a job, and without them the focus on employment alone is futile - if you are unable to acclimate to American culture and perform many of the civic duties and life skills mentioned, one's ability to get and keep a job for self-sufficiency will not happen, or won't happen in a sustainable way - just as it won't happen if we don't focus on these same kinds of things with our ABE/ASE population.
